Title Delivery

When you purchase a vehicle in Indiana, you are legally entitled to receive your title in a timely manner. Under Indiana law, dealerships must deliver the vehicle title within 31 days of the purchase date.

This timeline is critical - receiving your title promptly ensures you can complete registration and obtain your license plate within the timeframe required by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

How Title Delivery Works at Curry Auto Center

We handle the title process for you to simplify your experience and eliminate unnecessary trips.

What We Do

  • Process all title paperwork on your behalf
  • Submit required title and lien documentation to the state
  • Ensure compliance with Indiana's 31-day legal requirement

Title Fee

  • Indiana title fee: $15
  • This is the same fee you would pay directly at the BMV - we collect that fee on behalf of the BMV
We do not charge a Convenience Fee. Most Indiana dealerships charge a $22.50 Convenience Fee, but we do not.
Visit our page on Dealership Fees for additional information regarding the fees that we charge.

Where Your Title Goes

Delivery depends on whether there is a lien on the vehicle:

  • No Lien (cash purchase):
Title is mailed directly to you
  • With Lien (financed purchase):
Title is mailed to your lender (bank or finance company)

In both cases, you will receive a confirmation notice from us via mail once the title has been processed.

What Happens Next

After receiving your confirmation:

You must go to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to complete registration.

Important Distinction:

  • Title = handled by dealership
  • Registration & Plate = handled by purchaser

These are two separate transactions, and the BMV will not issue plates until the title has been properly processed.

Out-of-State Purchases

If you purchased your vehicle outside of Indiana or are registering it in another state:

  • Title procedures will vary based on state requirements
  • Additional documentation or steps may be required

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive my title in Indiana after buying a vehicle?
Indiana law requires the dealer to deliver the title within 31 days of purchase. We process title paperwork for Indiana customers to help keep the transaction on track.

Does the dealership handle the title work?
Yes. For Indiana deals, we process the title paperwork on your behalf.

How much is the Indiana title fee?
The Indiana title fee is $15. This is the same title fee you would pay through the BMV.

Will the title be mailed to me or to my lender?
If there is no lien, the title will be mailed to you. If there is a lien, the title will typically be mailed to the lender. We will also send you a confirmation once title processing is completed.

Do I need to go to the BMV for the title?
No. We handle the title transaction for eligible Indiana customers. After you receive confirmation from us, you will need to visit the BMV to complete registration and obtain your license plate.

Are title and registration the same thing?
No. They are separate transactions. We handle the title work. You are responsible for completing registration and getting your plate through the BMV. Indiana BMV guidance states that a vehicle must have a title on record before registration unless it is exempt from titling.

Can I register my vehicle before the title is processed?
Generally, no. The BMV requires the vehicle title to be on record before registration, unless the vehicle falls under an exemption recognized by Indiana law.

What if I bought a vehicle but live outside Indiana?
Out-of-state transactions are handled differently because title and registration requirements vary by state. Contact your finance manager for details specific to your purchase.

Who should I contact if I have questions about my title?
Please contact the finance manager you worked with during your purchase.
